Little Kid, Big Question, Huge Heart

My daughter and her husband are missionaries. They are in the process of changing mission fields from Leon, Nicaragua to Mexico City. In the interim they are in the States traveling to different churches raising additional support. They are presently at a church in Massachusetts. As is the the case occasionally, there will be other missionaries at the same church presenting their work to the congregation. Last night, while my daughter and her husband were in a meeting, my granddaughter, Moriah, was listening to a missionary give a talk about recently being forced to leave Venezuela by Hugo Chavez, the self-appointed dictator. Few outsiders grasp the intensity of the bond developed between missionaries and the people to whom they minister. Missionaries invest their lives totally in the people God has called them to. So when they are forced to leave, the separation is similar to the separation of family members from one another.
Now my granddaughter, age 8, and her brother, Jonah, age 4, have sacrificed many of the things ordinary children take for granted here in the States. But Moriah has never given up her heart for others. During the Q&A time at the end of the missionary’s talk Moriah asked in front of the church “How do you get over the sadness in your heart about being kicked out of Venezuela?” Big question for such a small person!
Only a child who has experienced a sense of loss similar to what this missionary has experienced could ask such a question. According to her mother, Moriah is indeed dealing with the loss her friends and grieving over leaving Nicaragua. Please pray for her as she faces the task of adjusting to a new culture and environment in Mexico City. Romans 8:18, Romans 8:28.
Increasing in Him,
John
